A research project on sediment disasters—proposed by a research team led by Gunma University with our company participating as a joint research institution—has been conditionally selected for the “Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS),” a program jointly implemented by JST (Japan Science and Technology Agency) and JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency).

(Note: Conditional selection means that the official start of the joint research will be subject to the conclusion of an international agreement between the Government of Japan and the partner country, as well as working-level agreements with relevant institutions in the partner country.)

This research project, titled “Integrated Risk Assessment and Digitalised Community-based Early Warning System for Landslides and Debris Flows in Central Vietnam: Harnessing Remote Sensing Technologies and Evaluating Mitigation Measures with Cost-Benefit Analysis in Hue” aims to improve the prediction accuracy of shallow landslides and debris flows by utilizing high-density meteorological radar and satellite remote sensing technologies. The results will be applied to build early warning systems and develop long-term disaster prevention strategies.

The international joint research team includes Gunma University, Saitama University, Tokyo City University, Thuyloi University (Vietnam), the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam, the Irrigation Department of Hue Province, the Department of Information and Communications, FPT Software, and Earth System Science.

Formal joint research activities are expected to commence following consultations and agreements with the relevant government agencies of the partner country.
